Wine Regions of Argentina
In the wine business for 500 years. Argentina produces some 80
percent of all of South America's wines. But only recently has
Argentina begun to garner a much-deserved reputation for quality.

Argentina is the largest wine producer in South America and the 5th largest
producer in the world and is known for producing some of the world's best
Malbec. Although the country consumes 90 percent of the wine it produces, it
began export significant quantities of wine to other countries, prompting a
movement to enhance overall quality to meet the standards on international
consumers. In addition, wine tourism to the country increased, with the
Mendoza region being a preferred destination.
Naturally, Argentine wine-making has its roots in Spain. In 1557, Juan Cedrón
brought the first vine cuttings to Santiago del Estero. Soon wine production
spread to neighboring regions, and then to other parts of the country.
Argentina's wine producing regions tend toward the arid, so vineyards rarely
face the problems of insects, fungi, moulds and other diseases that affect
grapes in other countries. The country is best known for its Malbec (also known
as Auxerrois), but other grape varieties include Bonarda (or called Charbono in
California), Torrontés (a kind of Malvasia), Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and
Chardonnay.
Regions
There are three major wine growing regions in Argentina:
Mendoza
This region, a few hundred miles due east of the Argentine capital, Buenos
Aires, accounts for more 80 percent of the country's wine production. Varietals
made include Cabernet, Merlot, Chardonnay, Syrahs and Malbec.
Salta
About 500 miles northwest of Buenos Aires, Salta is situated on Argentina's
northern frontier. The region produces generally high quality Cabernets
Sauvignons and Torrontés.
Rio Negro
Lying in the South and partly adjacent to the Atlantic Rio Negro borders on the
wilds of Patagonia. The region produces increasingly interesting cool-climate
varieties like Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir as well as sparkling wines.
Other up-and-coming regions include: San Juan, La Rioja, Catamarca, Jujuy,
Neuquén and Córdoba.
