Essential Gear
In this section you'll find what you need to get started enjoying
wine and sharing your enjoyment with others.
You will need:
Proper Stemware Glasses – There are two
types of red wine glasses, Bordeaux
glasses, which are tall and have a wide
bowl, and Burgundy glasses, which have a
deeper, rounder bowl for catching and
holding more aroma. White wine glasses
are a bit narrower, which held keep the
chilled white wine cool. Flutes are generally
recommended over saucer-shaped
glasses for sparkling wine, as they help
keep the wine from going flat too
quickly.

Wine knowledge for the wine novice

Some people prefer to rinse their glasses with water between different
wines. Others don't. When you begin, the glasses should be completely
clean, dry, and polished. Wash them in hot water, without any detergent
which can leave an odor.
Food – Mild cheese, crackers, some baguette and fruit are all nice-to-haves
and help cleanse the palate between wines.
Writing Materials – If you want to take notes.
Water – Room temperature water is good to keep around for cleansing the
palette
A Spittoon – Wine's got alcohol in it. Alcohol can impair your judgment of the
wine -- and other things -- if you let it go to your head. As such, some people
like not to swallow, or to swallow only a little, of the wine and spit the rest
out. An ice bucket makes a handy spittoon. You can also use it to dispose of
excess wine when going from one wine to another.
A White Table Cloth – Essential to act as a background for observing a
wine's color.
