Lexicon: Quaffer to Rubber band

Q
Quaffer
A wines that's so easy to drink you just want to quaff 'er right down. Maybe even
in shots. OK, just kidding.
Qualitätswein mit Prädikat
A German term for the highest quality rating for their wines. It's usually
abbreviated "QMP" because Qualitätswein mit Prädikat is unpronounceable
even among Germans.
Racy
A smart-alec wine snob term meaning "acidic in a good way."
Recioto
A wine from the Veneto region of Italy, made from especially ripe grapes and
made using "passito" process. Reciotos are usually sweet, although Amarone
is dry.
Red fruit.
A term for red wines with mixed flavors of apples, raspberries, strawberries
and so forth.
Reserva
A Spanish legal term for wines aged before sale. Reserva reds are aged at
least three years.
Residual sugar
A technical term referring to the sugar that remains in naturally sweet wines
after the fermentation converts the fruit sugars to alcohol.
Rheingau
A German wine-growing region on the Rhine considered among the most
favored.
Rhône
A wine-growing region of France that dates to the 14th century and is
considered among the best. Côtes-du-Rhônes reds are some of my personal
favorites. Mmmmm…
Ribera del Duero
A wine-growing region of Spain that is said to produce some exceptional these
Tempranillo-based reds.
Riesling
A noble German white grape of the Rhine and Mosel areas. Rieslings are
usually slightly sweet with strong acidity. A lot of uninformed people believe
that the Germans can only make good beer. They're wrong.
Rioja
A wine-growing region in Spain named for the Rio Oja river. The wines, made
from red tempranillo and other grapes, are considered Spain's best.
Ripasso
A wine-making practice of Valpolicella, a region in Italy. In the Ripasso
process, wine made during a recent vintage is set aside and then placed on
the pressed grapeskins and lees in the vats just used for Amarone giving it a
particular body and flavor.
Ripe
A general description of the overall of fruit quality in a wine, generally positive.
Reserva
An Italian legal term for a wine aged for a designated period before bottling;
regulations vary from one region to another. (See also "Reserva.")
Robust
A descriptor for a wine that's really, really full-bodied and full-flavored -- a
robust wine is one that's not afraid to stand up and say "howdy."
Rosé
Wine that's pink. Contrary to prevailing opinion, proper rosé wines are not
made by blending red and white juice, but by using red grapes and removing
the skins from the fermenter before they have had time to pass on very much
color. Rosé wines are sometimes called vin gris (which is French for "gray
wine"). Don't confuse rosé wines with cheap American "blush" wines, such as
the so-called "white zinfandel."
Rosso di Montalcino
A dry Italian red from Tuscany that is not aged in wood and that is sold young --
generally a good deal.
Rough
A harshness in a wine, often characteristic of "spaghetti" wines.
Roussanne
A white grape from the Rhone region of France.
Rubber band
A flavor descriptor akin to "burnt match."
