White Blends & Regionals
While most white wines are sold as varietals, under the name of the
grape type, others are blended in order to give balance between
fruitiness and tanginess. Here are a few favorites.
Bordeaux Blends
  • Grown In: Bordeaux, France
  • Descriptors: Light, dry, floral
  • Popular Pairings: Fish, chicken, pork, light pasta, salads, cheese
White Bordeaux is usually made from a blend of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc,
and sometimes a little Muscadelle grape which produce pleasant dry table
wines. These wines are ideal as "first course," as an aperitif, or alone.
Bordeaux blends also produce sweet desert wines such as Sauternes.

Liebfraumilch
  • Grown In: Germany
  • Descriptors: Fruit, sweet, viscous
  • Popular Pairings: Asian food, sweet breads, poultry, game
The name, Liebfraumilch, comes  a German word literally meaning "milk of our
blessed mother." It's a sweet, blended wine from various grapes including
Müller-Thurgau and Riesling.

Rhône Blends
  • Grown In: Rhone, France
  • Descriptors: Rich, fruity, spicy, nutty, crisp, peachy
  • Popular Pairings: Poultry, fish, pork, veal
French wine law says that blends made in the Rhône Appellation d'origine
Contrôlée must be made up of at least two white grapes from the region.
These may include two or more of Viognier, Rousanne, Grenache Blanc and
Marsanne and a few other minor grapes in small amounts. Rhone blends tend
to be rich, fruity and aromatic and crisp.
